Whenever you are working around machinery, you have to be extremely conscious of any loose or dangling clothing.  If you are working for a company that also requires you to display identification, then the only solution is a breakaway lanyard.  A lanyard provides an easy ID holder for people like me who work hard and the breakaway safety feature is necessary for people at risk for an injury from a tool or machine.

I like having the lanyard because at my job as a metal fabricator in a large machine shop, I always wear simple clothing and I get in really tight places, so I usually leave bulky items like my phone, wallet, and multi-tool in my locker.  The lanyard allows me to display my ID while keeping my hands free and not dropping it out of my pocket. 

For safety’s sake, though, I insist on having the breakaway lanyards for my ID.  If anything attached to my body were to get caught in some of the machinery that I use several times a day, it would mean a trip to the hospital at the very least.  The breakaway lanyard ensures that I can show proper ID when necessary without compromising my safety at work.
