It depends. If you are driving, you must have a valid driver’s license available to show to the police on request. You are NOT required, however, to carry a photo ID with you when walking around in public and you are not required to show it to a police officer on request.

Ohio has what’s called a "stop and identify" statute. This means that if the police reasonably suspect that you are engaged in criminal activity or have witnessed certain criminal activity, they can ask you to provide your name, date of birth, and address. The information you provide must be correct, but you are NOT required to provide any more information than that. You can, however, share this information verbally; you don’t have to be carrying a photo ID.

If a police officer asks to see your ID, you should say "officer, are you detaining me, or am I free to go?" If they indicate that they are detaining you, you should be prepared to tell them your name, date of birth, and address. You are perfectly free to assert your Fifth Amendment rights to remain silent and refuse to disclose any additional information without the assistance of an attorney.

I do not have a photo ID but am planning on getting one soon, all I have is my birth certificate, and I know my social security number. And I may have a job very soon.

You need government-issued photo ID (e.g. drivers license, US passport, etc), plus your actual Social Security CARD, not just a number. You must submit proper documentation along with your I-9 form proving that you are a US citizen or legal immigrant/visa holder who is duly authorized to work in the US. For insurance purposes or to prove you are legally old enough to work without a work permit under your state’s child labor laws, they may require proof of date of birth.

No, you don’t need ID to send a letter and there is no age limit. Kids barely old enough to write can send letters to Santa Claus at Christmas.. You will need ID only if you’re picking up a parcel or registered letter at a post office. If you send a letter with a tracking number, the form you fill out on the letter has a space for your name and phone number. I don’t know if it’s mandatory to fill out those spaces, I’ve never tried not doing it. The purpose of the tracking feature is so they can keep track of what you sent and notify you if something happens and your name on the thing is the only way they can do that. You can go to a post office and ask if it’s absolutely necessary to put your name and address on it but since it’s generally to your advantage to do so, it’s going to look kind of funny if you don’t.

My recruiter said i need to bring a photo id and my social security card in on Thursday to finish signing my papers, but i don’t have a photo id and to get a state it well take 3-4 weeks. I just saw my recruiter today and I signed all of my papers and took the practice test. Yes, you need your photo id. Yes you need your social security card. And yes you need your birth certificate. The reason being is because your recruiter will photocopy all of these items. Obviously, anyone can pretend to be you. They can have your birth certificate and your social security card, but it’s really hard to have your face. And it does NOT take 3-4 weeks to get a state ID. When I went, it took like, what, 30-45 minutes? It’s a fast process. They make you fill out a form, take your picture, sign the card and you are on your merry little way.

Don’t forget your High School Diploma if you have it. Wake up nice and early tomorrow (No matter how early you wake up, there’s still going to be a line) and get your ID. It takes less than an hour. And good luck. The practice test is easy, and I heard the real one is even easier. (Why do they do that…jeez) I’m going for the Air Force. There were so many people in the Army office. Heehee.

I keep reading liberals comments that there is no law requiring they carry Identification. I travel a lot, and have been reassured to see TSA prevent folks without photo ID from boarding. You can get a State ID card at the agency that issues drivers licenses. You will need your birt certificate and usually a Social Security card.

I asked this already, but I wasn’t specific enough. I currently don’t have my state ID to prove I’m over 18, so would a birth certificate and college photo ID of me work the same? you can get a state ID with a birth certificate and a passport or other form of ID, when I took a bunch of teens to the DMV for state IDs they showed their birth certificates and school ID’s, anything that is National recognized,
you can call them in the morning, they may take a car title or medical records, something from college or HS, maybe a diploma?
I live in a back state though, so our laws are a little more easy I think then others, but if you call, just ask what 2 forms can you use?
I do know it has to be 2, not one,
a birth certificate great, but they really want something with a picture/photo on it.

Some banks offer a photo id credit card. Perhaps that might be a simple way. Either that or apply for a passport even if you are not intending to travel.

Photo drivers licence is the usual in the US, as most people don’t have or need a passport (ell, untill recently, you now need one to go to canada)

as a tourist (you’re accent kinda gives it away), it will be fine to say its back at the hotel. for entrance to clubs, then yes.. passport or drivers licence showing you are over 21.

In the past what I have done, for genearl ID, is to have a photocopy. If they want to see the original, then whoever is interested, can take me back to the hotel OR they can phone the hotel to confirm I am staying there.

Clubs… will probably want the original, but try it anyway.. or use your less improtant drivers licence (easier/cheaper to replace and you can still leave the country !)
