I am a student at Algoma University, located in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada. Like most other small to mid-sized universities, Algoma students are expected to carry identification cards with their pictures on them in order to be able to take out books. Anyhow, I heard that in the late 60s, there was a movement among academics and students alike to protest this, and at least one professor attempted to check out books without a student ID card kept on taking books up to the front desk, and when the librarian refused to check them out, he would go collect more books and bring them to the front desk, continuing this cycle. Eventually, he got fired, taken to court, and fined. My question is this: I haven’t heard much about this movement these days, and I was just wondering whether or not this still exists, and, most importantly, why they were protesting photo ID cards for libraries and students. Any resources (web sites, books, scholarly articles) on the subject would be appreciated.

not sure about canada, but for students here, it is for easy identification. this is identification for book being checked out, getting into any dorm or school facility, and for easy identification in case of death (like dog tags). I believe the photo ID is a good idea, and trust me ten years down the road you will get a kick out of your old school id pictures.

When "they" ask for a government ID, you can use a state issued ID card. These are cheap and fast.

im homeschooled so i dont have a school id and i dont have my drivers license. and i NEED a photo id. within 4 weeks!.. so im applying at the DMV for one. i know it could take up to 60 days but does it really ever take that long??? my dad said he got his license in 2 weeks. how long did it take for you??

about two weeks is right! DMV will give you a paper copy that is adequate to use until your actual card arrives. Bay Area Here

I can’t really say for Grey Hound because I don’t use that mode of transportation. Which type of train? I know for the subway and the Metro North, Pathway, NJ Transit type of trains you definitely do not need a photo ID to purchase a ticket. In most of those stations there are ticket booths as well as ticket machines to purchase tickets. For the Metro-North you can also purchase your ticket off of the MTA website.

You cut it pretty close, but last time I got mine it arrived a week later.

It’s just a guess, but maybe they want you to get it so that you’ll have a second form of identification after you complete the citizenship process and the greencard is no longer valid?

Do you have a passport or visa? What government agency can issue you a picture I.D. card? Here in the United States, you can buy one at the Department of Motor Vehicles (place where you get your driver’s license). I would go to the government offices and find out what documents you need in order to obtain a government issued picture I.D. I would not worry too much as you still have some time before your trip. However I would get this issue resolved as soon as possible.

you can get a passport. applications should be at your local post office. or i.d. (yes, with photo) from dept. of motor vehicles – they issue i.d.s that are not driver’s licenses.

She is out of work and can’t even get food stamps because she needs some type of photo ID. She went to the DMV to try and get a State ID but she still needs some type of ID just to get that. The first thing she needs is to get a copy or her birth certificate- call any government office in the phone book and they will tell you where you need to go to get the copy mad-It’s done by computer and only takes minutes. call the ssi office and they can send a copy of the ssi number to your friend.
Armed with the birth certificate she should be able to get the photo and drivers license from the state and that should get her the id she needs for the food stamps

well actually its not valid, but yes it works sometimes at small airports, but try to carry original id card if possible as airports in metro cities like delhi, mumbai do not accept photocopy of id card.
