I need your help answering this question for an assignment. What are the issues relating to terminology, law, and identification of mental retardation?
lets put it like this they think people like me with metal retardation can not commit a crime unless someone helps us. which is untrue

Some things to consider: you cannot label someone with mental retardation based on a single test. You cannot make a designation of mental retardation with an IQ score alone.
Most people think that mental retardation means that a person has a low IQ. This is not true. You also have to be able to demonstrate that the person lacks adaptive skills. With regards to children in schools, you additionally have to be able to document poor academic performance.
Another issue to consider is that of cultural diversity and special populations. People from other cultures tend to do more poorly on IQ tests than white Americans. It has been argued that this is because most IQ tests contain items that are culturally biased. That is, people from white America would be more likely to have been exposed to the material, therefore would be more likely to perform better on the tests. Also, it would be unreasonable to give a verbally administered IQ test to a person who is hearing impaired. In that case, the fact that they have hearing loss would affect their performance on the test.
These are just a few issues to consider…
