Do you need a professional photo ID when you apply for a passport or would just a digital photograph work as long as all the requirements were met?

It’s better to have a professionally taken passport photo because they know the exact requirements needed and if the Passport office says the photo is unnacceptable you should be able to take it back and request that the photo shop redo it for free.

If you do it yourself you have to make sure that the picture doesn’t look too grainy, has decent quality inks, paper and of course meet all the other requirements that the passport office likes you to meet (size of head, lighting, glare on glasses, angle of head etc).

I had to go to a professional photographershop to get a passport picture.

It depends on the country but I doubt that a self-taken photograph will not do.

You can potentially use one taken at home, as long as it meets all criteria with regards to sizing, position, focus, lighting, background etc, and is acceptable to the passport service. By and large, most unprofessional photos do not meet criteria, which is why it’s usually less fuss overall to have one taken in a studio or an ID photo booth.

Why not ask at the consulate“s office? Depending on the country, the consulate“s office should be able to offer you info concerning the passport identification criteria.

If the passport id is American, get it done professionally.

I am an acceptance agent in minnesota for the passport agency. You can do your own photos, just make sure you put it on photo paper and the background is white. You will save money if you bring your own Here is some more info for you:

Frame subject with full face, front view, eyes open
Make sure photo presents full head from top of hair to bottom of chin; height of head should measure 1 inch to 1-3/8 inches (25 mm to 35 mm)
    Center head within frame
Make sure eye height is between 1-1/8 inches to 1-3/8 inches (28 mm and 35 mm) from bottom of photo
Photograph subject against a plain white or off-white background
Position subject and lighting so that there are no distracting shadows on the face or background
