My husband is going to graduate (navy) boot camp. Do I have to wait to get our ID cards for my son and I or can I get them myself, because my son needs to go to the doctor.

You do not need an ID card to get medical care. When your information was entered into DEERS you were automatically enrolled into Tricare Standard. With Standard there is a yearly deductible and co-pay for each visit to a civilian doctor, hospital or clinic. You must go to one that is approved by Tricare and all you need is the AD member’s SSN (learn it, you will need it all the time).

About week 4 you will get a package in the mail that contains a Form DD1172 to get an ID card. Unless you have it you cannot get one. You go to the closest base or Reserve/National Guard center to you and submit the document to get an ID card. Your child will not get one unless he is over 10 years of age. When you get your ID card then you can change to Tricare Prime or Prime Remote.

I wouldn’t think you’d have to wait. The day your husband joined, you became a military spouse and thus eligible for military benefits.

Find the nearest ID card office, probably on the nearest military base. (Google your location with "site:.mil") Take your photo ID, marriage certificate, birth certificate, and Social Security Card, plus the birth certificate and social security card of your child.

Best bet is to find the nearest ID card office and call ahead just to be sure.

Your son might not need a ID card if he is under the age of 12. Before you can take him to the doctors you must make sure that are you enrolled in Deers. You also need to check in with benefits office to find out what kind of Tricare is available in your area.

you should have gotten a packet within 30 days of him getting to Great lakes with all the necessary paperwork to get your ID card.

if you did not, then you must wait until your spouse can accompany you to PSD or send you a completed DD 1172 again. .
